Oklahoma State defensive end Cooper Bassett recorded his first-career interception in the first quarter of the Cowboys' 66-6 win over Texas Tech. He talked about that moment and the defense's performance against the Red Raiders.
What did you see on the interception play? How often do you get to drop into coverage?
“We've had that in our speed package when I'm in at nose (tackle). There's a couple plays where I drop out. We saw how Texas played them, and Texas blitzed their linebackers and the nose dropped out. I always joke around in practice about me getting an interception, but it's never happened. Today, (Doege) threw it, and luckily I was there and tipped it and it fell back to me and I got the pick. It was an awesome feeling. Definitely wasn't expecting it, but definitely glad I had it.”
But you're a former tight end. Were you hoping to get some return yards out of it?
“You can tell my returning skills aren't as sharp as I want them to be. I didn't get much of a return — guys were teasing me about that. But to get the interception, God put me in a great place and helped me make a big play, so it was awesome. I'll take it, whether I had zero return yards or 80 return yards."
What's it like to win a game 66-6?
“Of course, a close game where we win against a big-time opponent and everyone's still in the stands when we finish the game, those are exciting. But games like today you can really enjoy, and it definitely keeps the gray hairs out of your head.”
