OSU football coach Mike Gundy recently said he would make a formal announcement before signing day on Feb. 4 detailing exactly what his assistant coaches’ duties would be. With so many staff changes, there is some shifting expected among the remaining coaches, but it remains a mystery exactly how some positions will be handled.
Robert Gillespie, as expected, will be the running backs coach, but the question remains regarding which positions Robert Matthews and new defensive coordinator Bill Young will oversee.
"I think we know,” Matthews said last week in his first media appearance since being promoted from recruiting coordinator earlier this month. "Coach is going to make some sort of formal announcement, but since I’m not the head coach, I’m not at liberty to say.”
Currently, OSU is without a receivers coach, and offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer had previously coached the position, so he could return and Matthews could take over quarterbacks.
There has also been speculation that Matthews could become an additional defensive assistant.
Young has been a defensive line coach most of his career, the same spot coached by Glenn Spencer last season. Before he departed, Tim Beckman coached linebackers, so there will be some shuffling to do among the coaches of the defensive front seven.
