Former Oklahoma State running back Keith Toston entered the football season as a backup to All-American Kendall Hunter. He ended the season as an All-Big 12 running back who had displayed the versatility that could give him the opportunity to play on Sundays.
talked with Toston about his experience at the East-West Shrine game, his draft projection and the upcoming NFL Combine:
How has the draft process been? Is it tougher than you expected?
"It’s not tougher, the workouts are pretty much the same, (OSU strength coach Rob) Glass gives us a good workout, keeps us in good shape. It’s nerves. You’ve never been in this situation before. You’re nerves are going to be running, but we just have to stick with what we’ve been doing your whole life.”
→It’s the biggest job interview of your life, but it last for months. Is that weird?
"It’s pretty weird. You would think you could make it just off your game tape and what you’ve done for a whole year. You’re done with your season, then you see it’s not over. You have all-star games, you have the Combine — which determines a lot — then you have another chance at Pro Day.”
→Where are you projected?
"They said at the earliest third round, worst-case fifth round. Anywhere between third and fifth depending on how I do (at the Combine and Pro days). I got a lot of good feedback off the Shrine game. A lot of people said I was the best back there. It’s (given me) confidence to keep me working hard.”
→What things do you want to show at the NFL Combine (Feb. 24-March 2) and Pro Day (March 10)?
"The things that will help me the most is my hands and my strength. I think a lot of guys want to see how fast I really am, so I want to shoot (for) a 4.5 in the 40 and everything else should fall in place. The most important thing for me will be to try to get a 4.5 in the 40.”
→What are teams saying they like about you?
"Being able to catch the ball, get tough yards, be a change-of-pace back and being able to pass block. I can be in there on third downs. A lot of teams need that.”
→What is the best case scenario for you on opening day 2010?
"Just getting the opportunity to play.
