After giving up a promising career as a reporter with ABC News, Lisa Salters has become one of ESPN’s top sideline reporters.
"You cover one terrorist bombing and plane crash too many,” Salters said. Salters left ABC News for ESPN in 2000 after covering the Oklahoma City bombing trial. "It just got to be too depressing.”
Salters has a sports background, having played basketball for two seasons at Penn State. She also is the cousin of former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett.
After covering Texas Tech’s 39-33 upset of Texas last Saturday, Salters will be back in Lubbock on Saturday night to broadcast the Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game, which will go to 82 percent of the nation.
Salters is hoping for another close game. "We love it when a game goes down to the last play,” said Salters, who interviewed Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell and wide receiver Michael Crabtree as fans mobbed the field. "We don’t like blowouts.
"Texas Tech is going to have watch out for the letdown, but (Texas Tech coach) Mike Leach is so calm that nothing seems to phase him,” she said. "They should be OK.”
Salters, who also is reporter for ESPN’s "E:60” magazine show and an NBA sideline reporter, said basketball is her favorite sport.
"It’s indoors — the climate is always the same — and the games are shorter. With football, you’re on your feet for five hours. By the third quarter, you can see me bending over and squatting, to try to get a little break.”
