Perrish Cox’s mistake turned into Brown’s opportunity.

Brown, then a redshirt freshman, replaced Cox in the Cotton Bowl and held his own against Ole Miss even though the Rebels continually picked on Brown.

“Coach told me they would because they had never seen No. 19 (on film),” Brown said. “It took my confidence to an even higher level. It was a SEC school with pretty good receivers.”

But one game doesn’t make a career. And Brown understands that.

“I still have to move forward,” said Brown, who is slated to start at one cornerback position in 2010. “I still have a lot to prove.”

Brown had an interception return for a touchdown in the Pokes’ Saturday scrimmage.

Report: Lavey out for season

Freshman middle linebacker Caleb Lavey will miss the entire season because of an elbow injury suffered last week, Gundy acknowledged Saturday.

The nature of the injury is unknown, but Gundy did indicate that surgery is not required. Lavey was a four-star recruit from Celina, Texas.
