For Alex Cate, his first career start didn’t go well.

He went 0-for-9 passing and threw an interception in a first half that brought boos from the stands of Boone Pickens Stadium. He was replaced by Brandon Weeden in the second half.

After the game, Cowboys coaches came to his defense.

"I know there will be some talk about Alex Cate not playing real well,” said Mike Gundy. "And he really didn’t play that well, he understands that. He had some situations that didn’t go his way. He’s very much a part of this team, and he’s worked very hard.

"He deserved the right, and he had an opportunity to play. He’s been in this program a number of years, and we felt like he was next in line so he’s who we went with. That falls on me.”

Said co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer: "Everyone’s going to want to blame Alex, because we didn’t complete a ball. But we didn’t help him any. We didn’t make any plays at receiver the first half. He maybe didn’t play his best, but we didn’t play our best either at any spot.

"I feel for him, because he’s worked hard.”

The Cowboys now have nine days to prepare for Bedlam.

And they need it, primarily to get quarterback Zac Robinson healed and ready for the game in Norman.

Robinson suited, but was not available to play against Colorado after a short week following the brutal shot he took against Texas Tech.

"Zac wasn’t ready to play,” Gundy said. "His head is clear, somewhat, and he’s got a sore shoulder. The combination of both of those, it just wasn’t the situation to put him out there to play.
