Oklahoma State sophomore Daytawion Lowe could miss the 2010 season with a shoulder injury, according to a source close to the situation.

A final decision on shoulder surgery has not been made, but Lowe, a former Carl Albert High standout, will definitely need the surgery at some point.

While playing through the injury is an option, concerns about further injury to the shoulder and the desire to protect his long-term health could force Lowe to have surgery before the season and take a redshirt year.

If Lowe, who was a playmaker on special teams as a freshman and appeared poised to be a key part of the Cowboys' defense this season, elects to have season-ending surgery it will be a tough blow for the secondary.

Fellow safety Victor Johnson's status with the team remains unclear, leaving the Pokes searching for depth at safety behind starters Markelle Martin and Johnny Thomas. Incoming freshmen Lavocheya Cooper, Deion Imade and Zach Craig will likely have a bigger opportunity to earn immediate playing time if Lowe misses the season.
