OSU football notebook: Here's why Mike Gundy doesn't coach defense

Cowboy defensive coaches set Gundy straight and he says, “We've got to make some adjustments. We've got to slow them down.”

Oklahoma State's defense was quite effective Saturday night against Texas Tech's high-powered offense, holding the Red Raiders to no points on 13 of their 18 possessions.

But while Tech staged a first-half rally, it sure didn't feel like it to Cowboy coach Mike Gundy.

Then the Cowboy defensive coaches set him straight.

“At one time I clicked over on the headphones,” Gundy said, “and I said, ‘We've got to make some adjustments. We've got to slow them down.' And they said they had 53 plays and only got 17 points.

“I said, ‘Yeah, that's a good point.' That's why I don't coach defense.”


Getting an interview with OSU quarterbacks has been a touchy situation for the past year or so, with Gundy periodically restricting access during in-seasons carousels and a spring competition.

Sunday night, Gundy officially announced that Clint Chelf — and, presumably, all other quarterbacks — will not be made available to the press for the rest of the season.

“Ever since we have started the year, there has been nothing but media opinion on who should play quarterback,” Gundy said. “And there is not really anything they can say about themselves or each other that is productive for the overall chemistry of the team.
