OSU football notebook: Josh Cooper, Nigel Nicholas impress

Midway through spring practices, Oklahoma State held its first scrimmage on Wednesday.

Receiver Josh Cooper and defensive tackle Nigel Nicholas were among the most impressive players during the 115-play scrimmage held inside Boone Pickens Stadium.

“Josh Cooper made a couple good plays, and Nigel Nicholas showed up a few times,” Gundy said. “I thought that both of the young quarterbacks in Clint Chelf and Johnny Deaton made some good plays. J.W. Walsh showed some progress. The young offensive linemen made some progress and the backs ran well.”


Chelf and Deaton are battling to earn the backup quarterback role behind All-Big 12 performer Brandon Weeden.

New offensive coordinator Todd Monken is looking for someone to win the job but understands it could be hard to separate the sophomore quarterbacks this spring.

“It's hard to determine a backup quarterback,” Monken said. “Because a lot of times they end up going with the backups at every other position. So if they get five reps, on a couple of them there's an O-line bust or receiver bust.
