With the offense returning nine starters, things went smoothly on Day 1 under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

“I'm very comfortable with where we are at on offense and where Coach Monken is at,” Gundy said. “I didn't see anything different today than what we had last year in spring ball.”

For Monken, the past three weeks have been filled with quality time watching OSU's offense in 2010.

“It's been crazy,” he said. “It's been three weeks — basically you are cramming for a test. Not only are you now coaching quarterbacks, you're learning a new offense and you're running the offensive meeting. But it's been great.”

OLD(ER) AND WISE

Monken loves the fact he has returning All-Big 12 quarterback Brandon Weeden set to become the trigger man of the Cowboys offense this season.

And it has nothing to do with Weeden's rocket arm or underrated accuracy.

It is Weeden's ability to communicate with Monken while the Pokes' new coordinator learns the offense.

“It's so easy because the guy is like 38-years old,” Monken said. “The guy has been around for a while. It's like dealing with an NFL guy.
