Oklahoma State cornerback Andrew McGee tops the Big 12 rankings in interceptions with four. After wondering if he would ever return to the football field following a broken neck against Oklahoma in 2009, McGee has been a cornerstone in the secondary.
"It feels good," McGee said of being tied with Texas Tech's Jarvis Phillips in interceptions. "It's one of those dreams, especially not knowing if I was going to play originally. It's been a big blessing."
McGee's interception against Kansas State was particularly impressive as the senior dove and caught a tipped pass despite playing the game with a cast on his left hand.
"I had envisioned it in my head, and that's one thing Coach (Mike) Gundy always tells us," McGee said of his fourth-quarter interception. "Coach (Gunter) Brewer had told me I was going to catch an interception right before that drive. It was awesome thing to see that come to pass."
Mike Gundy believes the college experience is a big part of growing up. Making good decisions and learning to fend for yourself are key parts of the maturation process.
That's why the Cowboys' coach doesn't see the need to set a daily curfew for his team or prohibit them from leaving Payne County during a game week.
"They have to be responsible for what they do," Gundy said. "You're talking about 127 guys. You can't make all of them stay at home."
BIG PLAY BEARS
Baylor presents a big problem with its big play offense. The Bears are No. 4 nationally in 60-plus yard plays (6), No. 3 in 50-plus yard plays (11), No. 4 in 40-plus yard plays (18), No. 1 in 30-plus yard plays and No. 2 in 20-plus yard plays according to cfbstats.com.
Clearly, keeping quarterback Robert Griffin III in check will be the key for OSU's defense, but the Bears have talented playmakers at other positions.
"With the athleticism that they have and the skill positions they have, if you miss tackles it will probably be a touchdown," defensive coordinator Bill Young said. "So obviously we have to do a great job tackling. I think that the best thing we did last week as far as tackling was trying to wrap up the runner more, and we will have to do that this week."
