OSU football notebook: Win would put Mike Gundy second on school's all-time wins list

OKLAHOMA STATE FOOTBALL — Mike Gundy has 57 wins in seven season at Oklahoma State. He needs one more to tie with Jim Lookabaugh and six more to pass Pat Jones, currently the school's all-time winningest coach.

Mike Gundy is looking for his first Bedlam win as the Oklahoma State head coach on Saturday night, but a victory would also tie him with Jim Lookabaugh for second on the school's all-time list with 58 wins.

It took Lookabaugh 11 seasons to reach 58 victories as Oklahoma A&M's coach from 1939-49. Gundy is in his seventh season leading the Cowboys.

Gundy needs six more wins to pass Pat Jones as the school's all-time winningest coach. Jones went 62-60-3 in 11 seasons from 1984-94.

OU comes into Saturday's game leading the nation in fewest sacks allowed (six), presenting a challenge to the Cowboy pass rush.

While OSU will certainly try to get pressure on Sooner quarterback Landry Jones, defensive coordinator Bill Young said recognizing when the pass is thrown and getting a hand up to bat the ball away might be even more important.

“The quarterback is a gifted player who goes back there and gets rid of the ball in a hurry,” Young said. “Not very many people even touch him. We've got to get in some throwing lanes, get our hands up, maybe tip some passes.

“We're probably going to have a better opportunity of doing that than sacking him.”

OSU defensive end Jamie Blatnick is tied for fourth in the Big 12 with seven sacks.

Gundy has gotten used to facing brother Cale, OU's running backs and fullbacks coach, each season. In fact, he almost forgets Cale is on the opposing sideline.

“Sometimes there'll be a play go out of bounds over there and I'll look and I'll see him and (think) ‘What's he doing over there?'” Mike said. “I kind of forget that he's over there, because I'm coaching the game and you don't really pay much attention to it.”
