Separation Saturday for backup QBsOklahoma State coach Mike Gundy is toying with some different ideas to figure out which of his backup quarterbacks is going to separate himself and win the outright No. 2 job behind Zac Robinson.
Gundy said he is considering giving Robinson only 15-20 snaps or perhaps not playing him at all in Saturday's 5 p.m. scrimmage before fans in Boone Pickens Stadium, instead splitting the 150 plays evenly between Alex Cate and Brandon Weeden. Gundy is also thinking about removing Cate's and Weeden's green target jerseys, which would allow defensive players to make full contact with the quarterbacks during the scrimmage. "That's what I'd like to do, but that scares me,” Gundy said. "That's really what we should do. That's how you find out if a guy can make a play or not. It's a lot different when you're not gonna get blown up, or when decisions you make have to do with you getting hit or not.” Regardless of what he decides, Saturday's scrimmage is a big opportunity for one of the players to create some separation. "If one of them wasn't performing, we could make the decision now. But they're both playing well,” Gundy said. "We'll try to let it run as long as we can until somebody takes the job. I'd certainly like to (decide) by the middle of next week. The scrimmage will have lots to do with it.” •Horton to report today: A paperwork holdup with the NCAA eligibility committee finally came through Thursday, and Oklahoma State freshman Justin Horton will be eligible to participate in practice beginning today. Horton, a speedy 6-foot-4, 220-pound tight end from Henderson, Texas, was awaiting clearance while the NCAA worked to verify that he had taken all the necessary classes to be eligible. Horton might have had an opportunity to crack the depth chart as a backup to senior Brandon Pettigrew, but missing the first week will likely be too significant a setback for him to catch up to freshmen Jamal Mosley, Cooper Bassett and Wilson Youman. The only other true freshman currently not participating in camp is Jeremy Gray.
