Cowboys a near-TD favorite in opener
Oklahoma State is a six-to-seven-point favorite in its Aug. 30 opener at Washington State, according to multiple sportsbook Web sites.

The point spread initially opened with the Cowboys a five-point favorite.

Technically, the game is being played at a neutral site at Qwest Field in Seattle, approximately 290 miles from WSU's campus in Pullman, which could be a factor in setting the point spread.

The Cowboys and Cougars kick off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Fox Sports Southwest (Cox 37).

•Focusing on the present: Oklahoma State's Russell Okung has the body and the skills to one day be an NFL draft pick. In fact, with a good junior season, the Cowboys' left tackle could be a high-round draft choice should he decide to leave early.

But the 6-foot-5, 300-pound Fort Bend, Texas, native says he doesn't get caught up in that kind of thinking.

"I've always been the type of person who looks forward to that next game, even when I was in high school,” Okung said. "Recruiting wasn't as big to me as it was to some other guys. My main goal was to take care of whoever it was I was playing that week.

"Now, it's the same way. The NFL, that's not really something that's on my mind.”

•Struggling with the switch: For first-year Washington State coach Paul Wulff, the installation of his spread offense continues to be a work in progress for a team that stressed running the ball last season. The Cougars held their final major scrimmage of camp Friday, and inconsistency continues to be the theme.

"There was some good and some bad,” Wulff told the Seattle Times. "It feels like I've said that all camp. So we've got one week to get ourselves better, and make it a consistent good.”

Wulff attributed much of the offense's struggles to "sloppy route running” and a lack of consistency at receiver.
