OSU Football Notebook: Zac Robinson closes in on coach's passing record

Robinson closing on Gundy’s mark
Cowboys quarterback Zac Robinson has closed within almost automatic striking distance of the school passing yards record, held by OSU coach Mike Gundy.
With 7,923 yards, Robinson should pass Gundy’s mark of 7,997 Saturday at Iowa State.
Gundy has cheered on Robinson’s chase, for good reason.
Cowboys co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer said it’s been fun to watch.
"It’s pretty special,” Brewer said, "especially if it’s a guy who is not only coaching you, but the head coach and they’re still here at the same time. It’s pretty unique. They have formed a relationship since he’s been here.
"It’s kind of a different situation with all the things he’s been through this year, both personally and emotionally.”
Ames regrets
Gundy’s recent trips to Ames haven’t turned out so swell.
In his debut season as a head coach in 2005, the Cowboys were routed 37-10. The previous stop, when he was offensive coordinator on Les Miles’ staff in 2001, they left tailback Tatum Bell home for disciplinary reasons and were rolled 45-17 at Iowa State.
"I think it was Les who left Tatum at home,” Gundy joked. "I think I was all for taking Tatum.”
Searching for something good in Ames, Gundy can recall his playing days, when Barry Sanders ran wild in a 49-28 romp in 1988.
Receiver love
OSU’s loss to Texas coincided with one of Robinson’s roughest days as a Cowboy, with him throwing a career-worst four interceptions.
As is always the case, too much blame probably got attached to the quarterback.
"It’s not all his fault,” said wideout Justin Blackmon, "even though it may seem that way because he is the quarterback. You’ve got to keep your head up. And that’s what we told him after the game.”
In Focus: Iowa State
Cyclones back Alexander Robinson leads the Big 12 in rushing, averaging 101.6 yards per game.
And when Robinson left last week’s loss at Texas A&M with a groin injury, the Cyclones kept running, getting a burst off the bench from Bo Williams, a sophomore transfer from Florida.
Williams romped 44 yards on his first carry and finished with two attempts for 50 yards.
Once a touted prospect out of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., Williams offers ISU an added option at RB.
