Joe Wickline was the only voice Oklahoma State’s offensive linemen had heard for 10 years. Now Wickline is gone to Texas and a new message is being delivered by Bob Connelly, Wickline’s replacement.

Delivered, and at least in some corners, received happily.

Senior Daniel Koenig, OSU’s most experienced lineman, said Connelly has brought different schemes and steps to the line, with an emphasis on getting the tackles help on the outside in the form of double-teams from the guards.

“Wickline left tackles on an island a lot,” Koenig said. “He expected a lot of the tackles.

“Coach Connelly is fixing up our steps and our aiming points, stuff like that. And we’re breaking some big holes.”

Connelly is more focused on moving forward than looking back.

“I can’t speak on what coach Wickline did,” Connelly said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for him and the job that he did. His experience and his reputation speaks for itself. But they’re buying in to who I am.

“I told them the first day, ‘I don’t expect you to respect me Day 1. That comes. That’s earned.’ I think they’re realizing there are some things I can help them with fundamentally, technically. As long as they have some buy in and they believe in who I am and what I stand for and what I’m asking them to do works, at the end of the day they’re going to give you what they have.”
