OSU football recruiting: Dawson Bassett takes big brother Coopers advice, takes Mike Gundy's call

Dawson Bassett finally got the scholarship offer he had been waiting for.

As the younger brother of former Oklahoma State defensive end Cooper Bassett, Dawson had always dreamed that he'd get a chance to follow in his big brother's footsteps.

“It's always been my dream to play at OSU,” Dawson said. “Everyone knows who my brother is, if you read The Oklahoman at all, you know who he is. I've definitely wanted to be that guy.”

But as signing day neared, Dawson still hadn't received an offer from the Cowboys.

“Missouri recruited me hard during this whole process,” Dawson said. “They had told me early last week they were leaning towards offering me and that's what my focus was on.”

Dawson's focus changed after he got a call from his big brother.

“My brother called me last week and said that if I get a phone call from Stillwater I needed to answer it, even if I'm in class,” Dawson said.

That phone call came from Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy.

“My phone went off when I was at lunch,” Dawson said. “I answered and it was Mike Gundy. He ended up offering me and I accepted. I was completely shocked.”

Cooper has no doubts the Cowboys made the right decision to offer his younger brother. He even believes Dawson's career will overshadow his own at OSU.
