Killeen, Texas, safety Deric Robertson knew Oklahoma State wasn't the place for him if he wanted to come in and start right away.

With seniors already filling out most of the depth chart at the two safety positions, immediate playing time isn't necessarily an option.

The 2013 season will be one of watching and learning — and Robertson is just fine with that.

“I think that's real exciting, because I'll get to learn from guys like Daytawion Lowe and Zack Craig,” he said. “Then I'll have the opportunity to step in and produce and play a lot in that second year. It's a good situation for me, and (other safety recruits) Tre Flowers and Jordan Sterns.”

Listed at 185 pounds, the 6-foot-2 Robertson says he has bulked up over 200, but has been able to maintain his speed, bringing valuable versatility with his size-quickness combination.

“You've got to realize you're carrying more weight, but it's not that hard,” he said. “I think I'd like to play right around 200 pounds.”

Before the recruiting process really picked up, OSU was a place Robertson had his eye on. After visiting the campus and meeting the coaches, he was sold.

“I already liked Oklahoma State as it was,” he said. “But getting to know the coaching staff and seeing the campus and the system they run, it really just drew me more to the school.”
