OSU football spring question: Writers weigh in on who the coaches will choose at quarterback
It looks like J.W. Walsh and Wes Lunt are the leaders in the race. Could Walsh take the job now and then be unseated by Lunt in the fall?
GINA MIZELL: If you would have asked me three weeks ago, I would have given the edge to J.W. Walsh. If you would have asked me three days ago, I would have given the edge to Wes Lunt. Now, after the spring game, I'm not so sure. Possibly leaning back toward Walsh. He had the best performance Saturday. But he's also been the most inconsistent throughout the 15 practices, with noticeable struggles during the middle portion of the spring. Lunt has continuously improved as he's gotten more comfortable in the offense, and there's no reason to believe he won't benefit greatly from OSU's summer program and fall camp. So, I think it's between those two, but I really don't know who the coaches will choose.

BERRY TRAMEL: I agree. I think Chelf's out. And I lean toward Walsh, too. His running ability makes for an attractive wrinkle. And Walsh is the safer pick. He's only one year ahead of Lunt, but that's a big year. When the lights came on Saturday, Walsh played well.

JOHN HELSLEY: Chelf's path to the QB spot was established pre-spring, when offensive coordinator Todd Monken said the onus was on Chelf to seize the spot and distance himself from the competition. Didn't happen. I, too, think Walsh might get the nod, but I hardly think he's got a stranglehold on the job. Ultimately, I think Lunt is the QB of the future — the near future.

GINA MIZELL: I definitely agree with that. In fact, I could see Walsh winning the job now but Lunt ultimately starting the season opener after going through fall camp. Could you hear that every time he let the ball rip, the crowd gasped? He's built like Brandon Weeden, has an arm like Brandon Weeden and, apparently, has a demeanor like Brandon Weeden, according to Todd Monken. That said, if Lunt becomes the starter — whether it's now or in August or midway through the season — I fully expect there to be a special package installed for Walsh with both running plays and throwing plays. He's too good of an athlete to keep on the sideline.
