OSU football: The race is on for starting quarterback

Center Evan Epstein can't predict which of the three candidates has the lead so far.

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State center Evan Epstein understands the fascination Cowboy fans have with the ongoing quarterback competition this spring.

He's obviously quite intrigued, as well, since he's the one who will likely snap the ball to the guy who wins the starting job.

“I can't even imagine you guys (media) trying to speculate on it,” Epstein said. “They're battling their butts off trying to get a spot, and I can't say enough better things about them and their work ethic.”

Through five practices, the quarterback derby between junior Clint Chelf, redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh and true freshman Wes Lunt continues to be the main storyline of spring. It will be that way until a starter is named.

But things haven't changed much since workouts began on March 12, as all three signal-callers continue to take equal reps and alternate running the first-team offense.

And with the constant switching, wide receiver Tracy Moore said different quarterbacks have shown flashes of positive play at different times. Moore said Walsh happened to have the best practice Wednesday.

“Each practice, one of them starts stepping up,” Moore said. “You know, rising to the occasion. Right now, it's just going to be a head game, which one can get it all up top. Them knowing what to do and who to throw it to, rather than how good they're throwing it to the person.”
