STILLWATER — Oklahoma State has opened on the road six of the past eight seasons, and the only two times the Cowboys hosted their opener, they faced inferior opponents. That changes this season when No. 13-ranked Georgia visits Stillwater to open the 2009 season. Here’s a look at OSU’s season openers since 2000: 2000: at Tulsa, Chapman (formerly Skelly) Stadium, OSU 36-26 Coming off a 5-6 season, OSU took a 21-point first-quarter lead and held off Tulsa’s rally. Reggie White rushed for 187 yards and a touchdown in the win. The Cowboys finished 3-8. 2001: at Southern Mississippi, Roberts Stadium, So. Miss 17-9 The Cowboys lost four fumbles and were held to 45 rushing yards as they lost Les Miles’ first game as head coach. OSU finished 4-7 in Miles’ first year. 2002: at Louisana Tech, Independence Stadium, La. Tech 39-36 OSU suffered one of its most disappointing defeats of the year, squandering an 18-point lead in the second half. OSU finished 8-5, including wins over Nebraska and Oklahoma. 2003: at Nebraska, Memorial Stadium, Nebraska 17-7 OSU opened the season at No. 24 but lost to the Huskers to begin the year. The Cowboys rallied to win seven straight games and finish 9-4 after a Cotton Bowl loss to Ole Miss. 2004: at UCLA, Rose Bowl, OSU 31-20 The Cowboys won five straight games to start the season and finished with a 7-5 record after their Alamo Bowl loss to Ohio State. 2005: Montana State, Boone Pickens Stadium, OSU 15-10 In the first game of the Mike Gundy era, OSU struggled. The Cowboys had difficulty getting used to the upbeat, offensive system Gundy brought to Stillwater and finished 4-7. 2006: Missouri State, Boone Pickens Stadium, OSU 52-10 Unlike the year before, OSU dominated their cupcake opponent. The Cowboys finished 7-6, with an Independence Bowl win over Alabama. 2007: at Georgia, Georgia Stadium, UGA 35-14 Gundy believes he put too much focus on the Bulldogs two years ago. After the season-opening loss, OSU was 3-3 after six games before finishing 7-6 with an Insight Bowl win. 2008: at Washington State, Seahawks Stadium, OSU 39-13 The Cowboys send a message with a blowout road win in their season opener. OSU finished 9-4 with a loss to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.
