OSU Hoops: Cowboys Get 2014 PG Commit

by John Helsley Published: August 15, 2013

With the anticipated loss of Marcus Smart and Markel Brown following the upcoming season, OSU is in the market for future players at the guard spots.

Now they’ve got one, with the first commitment for the class of 2014: junior college point guard Joe Thomasson, as first reported in a web report.

Originally signed by WrightState, Thomasson’s career detoured to StateFairCommunity College in Sedalia, Mo. As a freshman a year ago, the 6-foot-4 Thomasson averaged 14.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.

“I can shoot it,” Thomasson told OStateIllustrated.com. “I can knock it down and I’ve got a lot of range and I think I showcased that.”

Thomasson told the web site that he first started talking with OSU in June and formed a bond with assistant coach Steve Middleton. Interest picked up at the Jerry Mullen’s JUCO Top 100 Camp.

“I’m not as big as Marcus Smart body-wise, but height-wise, I believe he is 6-4 and I’m 6-4, almost 6-5 and they’d seen that I averaged (five) assists last year,” Thomasson said. “So I’m just looking forward to coming in to contribute and play my role.

“I’m not trying to come in and be Marcus Smart or none of that. He hasn’t had nothing but success on the big-league level, so I’m going to come in and play my role and contribute and do whatever they ask me to do.”

OSU remains in play for several top high school guards, including Emmanuel Mudiay of Dallas, Dominic Magee of Louisiana and Alex Robinson of Arlington, Texas.
