What’s the respect level for OSU’s Marcus Smart beyond the college game?
Smart is the only non-NBA player scheduled to participate at the USA Basketball Men’s National Team Mini-Camp next week in Las Vegas.
The mini-camp, scheduled for July 22-25, will feature 29 players. Daily training sessions will lead into the 2013 USA Basketball Showcase, a blue-white intra-squad game at the Thomas & Mack Arena on the UNLV campus.
“It is a great honor to be invited to participate with the USA Men’s National Team,” Smart said in a release by OSU. “The other players at the mini-camp are NBA professionals who I look up to and respect. I’m excited to learn from them and to compete against them.”
Smart recently helped lead the USA U19 squad to and 9-0 mark and the world championship in the Czech Republic, averaging 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.2 assists.
“We’re very excited for Marcus,” said Cowboys coach Travis Ford. “It’s an incredible honor to be the lone college player to be selected. It’s a great honor for him and our program. He continues to represent us in a first-class manner, both on and off the court.”
Among the players scheduled to participate: Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, Denver’s Ty Lawson, Washington’s John Wall, New Orleans’ Harrison Barnes, Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan, Indiana’s George Hill and GoldenState’s Klay Thompson.
