OSU notebook: Mike Yurcich staying quiet on QBs

But it's gone beyond refusing to hint at who will start when OSU kicks off the season against Mississippi State in Houston on Aug. 31.

Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich is following boss Mike Gundy's lead by staying mum on the Cowboys' quarterback situation.

But it's gone beyond refusing to hint at who will start when OSU kicks off the season against Mississippi State in Houston on Aug. 31.

When asked if either Clint Chelf or J.W. Walsh made noticeable progress in a particular area during the spring, Yurcich didn't answer.

When asked if he likes letting the two quarterbacks continue to compete during fall camp, he barely answered.

“I don't really concern myself with that,” Yurcich said. “I'm just really happy that we have two good quarterbacks.”

Cowboy cornerbacks coach Van Malone admits he and former cornerbacks coach Jason Jones had become “best friends” during their season working together in Stillwater.

But a similar bond is already developing with new safeties coach Tim Duffie, because of the way Duffie's personality and coaching style mesh with the rest of the Cowboy staff and players.

“As soon as I met him, I knew he was the guy,” Malone said. “In the staff room, he expresses his opinions, but he's not going to flip the tables over if it doesn't go his way. With the players, he's fair and his personality is like he's a gentle giant.
