OSU notes: Big crowd at Boone

Oklahoma State had its second-largest crowd of the season — and its second largest crowd ever — on Saturday as 51,147 were in attendance to watch OSU beat Texas A&M.

OSU set the Boone Pickens Stadium record last week against Troy when 52,463 fans packed the stadium.

It was the third time ever that OSU has had back-to-back 50,000-plus crowds.

Unlucky 4

Texas A&M's jersey No. 4s had a tough first quarter. Oklahoma State scored its first touchdown when defensive back Ugo Chinasa picked off a pass that bounced off tight end Jamie McCoy's hands. Chinasa returned the interception six yards for the touchdown.

Then, later in the quarter wide, receiver Dez Bryant burned defensive back Danny Gorrer to score his first touchdown of the game.

Return game

After going 3-and-out late in the first quarter, the Aggies punted to Bryant, who returned the ball 78 yards for his second touchdown of the night. It was the longest punt return for an OSU player since R.W. McQuarters went 82 yards against Northeast Louisiana in 1997.

The Aggies scored quickly in return, with Mike Goodson running 80 yards into the end zone. The ensuing kickoff was a less impressive return for the Cowboys as Jacob Lacey bobbled the kick, then ran squarely into teammate Jeremy Broadway.

Devilish Dez

When asked about Bryant's superb performance, Gundy jokingly reminded the press that dealing with the star receiver isn't all fun and games.

“We had to calm him down some,” Gundy said, adding that Bryant gets “a little upset” when he doesn't get the ball on every play. “But the crowd's yelling, ‘Throw it to Dez,' so I think a lot of people agree with him.”

Gundy also mentioned that Bryant will be reporting to the stadium at 10 a.m. to run for a missed class last week.

Shades of gray

Texas A&M's third turnover of the game came when Aggies running back Cyrus Gray fumbled and OSU's Maurice Gray recovered.

Injury report

Defensive lineman Jeray Chatham and receiver Artrell Woods both played for the first time in several weeks.

While Chatham (foot) and Woods (knee) returned, tight end Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) remained sidelined. Scoring style

Oklahoma State had scored five times before it finally rushed for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter.

The Cowboys scored two defensive touchdowns (one by Chinasa, one by Patrick Lavine), a special teams touchdown (by Bryant) and two passing TDs (both from Robinson to Bryant) before Robinson scampered into the end zone with just over 2 minutes left in the third quarter.

Golf day

Oklahoma State golf coach Mike McGraw did pushups with the OSU cheerleaders after a touchdown, appearing to make it all the way to 49 before collapsing.

Also during the game sophomore Rickie Fowler was presented with the Ben Hogan Award, which he won last spring as the top collegiate golfer in the country.

I was able to make the trip to Stillwater for the first time in several years. The stadium is impressive and the facilities outstanding. The view was good and the sound was good - although I did not care for the announcer. We sat in section 332. The south stands had a goodly number of empty seats. But the crowd was big by past standards. I am of the opinion that the price of tickets is keeping many away. I for one could not afford to be there all the time. Several of my relatives who are alos OSU grads went as well, but separately. Their comments were that the prices were just too high. I agree. Do you hear this Mr. Holder?

They rarely give updates on other scores now because there is only one video screen. That will change once they get the horizontal boards up that run around the stadium (not sure what those boards are officially called). Most other schools that have those give nearly constant updates.

I to sit on the south side in section 303 and found it very hard to hear. From what I hear there were complaints about it being to loud so they turned off all the speakers besides the new array ontop of GIA. So if you sit in the west end zone or further to the west you probably can hear okay, but if you are closed to GIA good luck hearing much. With the speaker system like it was saturday it is comparable to ole rustoleum field's PA system.

I sit on the south side on the east 15 yard line (near the jumbotron)and thought the sound was off this game. I thought we were supposed to get a larger jumbotron. Am I wrong.

Jake, I'm not sure where you were sitting but there are at least 2 scoreboards you can read (one on the east and one on the west). They did score updates at halftime and the PA guy did a score update as well. And honestly, I have no idea how you thought the PA guy was impossible to hear. I thought the sound system projected his voice very well. Thanks for coming though! Hope to see you back again!

From my seats...I was so disapointed in the stadium...It was my first trip to Stillwater...We could hardly see the score board, there were no other score updates, PA guy was impossible to hear....Where were all the fans???? I think John Rhode said this place was better than Kyle Field...No..Except for one guy I was impressed by the OSU fans though..they made the game great..Thanks guys!

Gary, Could it be that the majority of our fans don't live and die by our football team. Some follow several of the other sports closely and can't afford to do it all. I have football and basketball season tickets and I try to make to several wrestling matches and baseball games but it is difficult. If football was the only program that we were good at, I would guess that we would have more fans at the games. Why do you care about us anyway? I don't bother reading articles about your school. Could it be that you are worried? Go Pokes!!

The stadium was full of orange and it was rocking. I agree with Bob. at this point, we appear to just not be filling up the club seats. The rest of the stadium looks pretty full. Club seats will take longer to fill as the big $$$ donors step up for those. However, the stadium itself was pretty full.

After reading the comments on the OU articles, I am beginning to think all the OSU fans go to the OU games, so they can come in and comment on them....lol

Most visiting teams are only given 5,000 tickets, it is the responsibility of the home team to fill the seats not the opposing team. That is why it is called home field advantage. Come on Poke fans, Boone did not ask for a bigger stadium to not fill it, go support your team

Gary, Troy brought a lot of people...thought they were going to win. The Aggies had no such illusion, so a lot of them stayed home. OSU people showed up. Once again, the only empty seating area appears to be the relatively expensive club section seats. Those will eventually get filled up, but probably not so much this season.

Wow, a comment about OSU being the best in something from the ouKlahoman?! (note Rickie Fowler on the OSU golf team and his recognition as the nation's top collegiate golfer) Oh wait, that one was buried at the bottom of a story about the OSU football game.
