Now he'll play the role of low man on the totem pole as a walk-on.

After announcing Wednesday he was returning to play football at OSU in 2011, Weeden announced he would also be joining the Oklahoma State golf team.

“I forgot to mention I'm also the newest member of the OSU golf team!!!!” Weeden announced via Twitter. “Proud to be part of something special! Football and Golf!!!!”

Cowboy golf coach Mike McGraw confirmed Weeden was indeed the newest Cowboy golfer.

“He's going to walk on for us,” McGraw said in a phone interview. “He's a great leader, he loves golf and he's a great Cowboy.”

McGraw said that Weeden would be required to practice and compete just like scholarship golfers, but when it's time for spring football practice, Weeden would be on the football field.

“We had to clear everything with Coach (Mike) Gundy, so when it's time for football practice, he'll be there,” McGraw said.

Weeden regularly plays golf with Kevin Tway and other OSU golfers. McGraw said Tway and the other golfers already have delivered scouting reports on Weeden's game.

“They like his game,” McGraw said. “Now am I saying he's going to lead us to a national championship? Probably not.”

McGraw and the OSU golf team start their spring season later this month. The team leaves on Jan. 29 for Hawaii, where the Cowboys will play in the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational.

OSU hosts the 2011 NCAA men's golf championship at Karsten Creek May 31-June 5.
