STILLWATER — Oklahoma State University says it's not liable for the death of a woman who fell down and hit her head while attending her grandson's high school football championship game at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Ronald Mayfield, the widower of Charlotte Mayfield, sued the university last month, alleging that that the university was negligent in its construction of the stadium steps.

Charlotte Mayfield fell backward down the steps on Dec. 9, 2011, and died after hitting her head.

In a response, Oklahoma State says it should be immune from the lawsuit under the Oklahoma sovereign immunity law that protects the state from liability and from lawsuits.

A hearing is set for Jan. 3 on OSU's request to dismiss the lawsuit.
