OSU winter media day notebook: Revamped Cowgirls need work
Published: November 3, 2009
The Oklahoma State women’s basketball team, featuring nine newcomers, gets its first real taste of competition Saturday with a scrimmage at TCU. After that, only a home exhibition with Washburn (Kan.) is left to prepare the Cowgirls for Arkansas-Little Rock in the Preseason WNIT.

NEW BLOOD
The new faces have created some liveliness in the Cowgirls’ basketball practices.
"From Day 1, the first day we lined up for sprints, the seniors were all jogging and they took off and beat us,” said Megan Byford, one of OSU’s four seniors.
Byford said she tried to warn the youngsters to pace themselves. But she appreciated the spark.
"They brought this whole other level,” Byford said. "They’ve pushed, and it’s been awesome.”
‘Z’ GETTING SOME BUZZ
There will be plenty of new faces on OSU’s wrestling roster this season, and one is Russian Alan Gelogaev otherwise known as "Z”. He trained under legendary Russian wrestler and coach Buvaisar Saitiev in Siberia for five years. But those credentials don’t mean he will automatically dominate. He’s still adjusting to collegiate wrestling.
"He grew up in an area of Russia that is the most dominant area in the world,” OSU coach John Smith said. "They’re tough people. Their experience is quite different from a 19-year-old American coming into school. He’s not a collegiate wrestler. He’s a freestyle wrestler. There will definitely be some time he’ll have to take and some hard experiences he’ll have to deal with.”
