OU art museum seeks works by Oscar Jacobson

NORMAN — The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is asking the public's help tracking down works by the late Oscar Brousse Jacobson to be included in a retrospective exhibition planned for 2015.

The exhibition will commemorate the centennial of his appointment at the University of Oklahoma. Jacobson served as director of the School of Art from 1915 to 1954.

The retrospective will be the most comprehensive exhibition of his work and career to date, said Mark White, the Eugene B. Adkins and chief curator at the OU art museum. White is spearheading the project.

Jacobson joined OU in 1915 as the only member of the art faculty. He eventually oversaw the dramatic expansion of the School of Art and the creation of an art museum in 1936 that would become the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, White said.

He was a passionate supporter of the visual arts of the Southwest and an enthusiastic promoter of American Indian fine art. Jacobson also was a prolific artist who created more than 600 works of art over his career, White said.
