OU basketball notebook: D.J. Bennett, Tyler Neal help Sooners hang close in loss

Bennett and Neal picked up the slack after Ryan Spangler and Cam Clark were benched with foul trouble.

The Sooners (20-8 overall, 9-6 Big 12) return home to host Texas at 3 p.m. Saturday (KOCB-34).

Oklahoma beat the Longhorns 88-85 on Jan. 4 in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

A win for the Sooners on Saturday would go a long way toward helping the Sooners seal any conference tiebreaker with the Longhorns or Iowa State.

The Cyclones and Longhorns, who entered Monday night tied with the Sooners for second place in the league, split their season series.

The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record against tied teams, then the season series against the highest-finishing team in the league down the standings until the tie is broken.


Tulsa coach Danny Manning, whose son Evan is a sophomore walk-on for the Jayhawks, was in the stands for Monday's game.

Danny Manning, who coaches James Woodard, the older brother of Sooners freshman Jordan, sat six rows behind OU's bench.

Manning led the Jayhawks to the 1988 national championship over Oklahoma.
