Bob Stoops announced Wednesday the reinstatement of suspended Sooners Trey Franks, Quentin Hayes and Jaz Reynolds.
The three were suspended, along with sophomore receiver Kameel Jackson, on May 9 for violating unspecified team rules.
Jackson, who was allowed to stay on his scholarship through summer school to improve his grades, was not reinstated. Stoops said he’ll evaluate Jackson’s situation after summer school ends and then make a decision.
Franks and Reynolds, both junior receivers, and Hayes, a sophomore defensive back, will practice with the team, but still be suspended for a “considerable” amount of games, Stoops said during a very brief media session before Wednesday’s Sooner Caravan at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
Reynolds was OU’s third-leading receiver last season with 41 receptions, 715 yards and five touchdowns. Franks was the Sooners’ leading kick returner, averaging 23.9 yards a return as a sophomore last season, and caught 22 passes for 196 yards.
If and when the two junior wideouts return to game action, they’ll give quarterback Landry Jones more experienced targets to go with junior Kenny Stills, who remains OU’s only active receiver with a career NCAA Division I reception.
Stills had 786 yards and five touchdowns last season.
True freshman Trey Metoyer received rave reviews during the spring, and his fellow incoming freshmen, Durron Neal, Sterling Shepard and Derrick Woods, along with junior-college transfer Lacoltan Bester, will also join the mix.
Both Franks and Reynolds have been suspended before. Reynolds was suspended after tweeting insensitive comments about a gunman at the University of Texas during OU/Texas week, and redshirted that season. He was also suspended for one game last season for a violation of team rules.
Franks was suspended for two games last season for violating unspecified team rules.
‘EVERYBODY JUST RELAX’
During the coach’s portion of the OU Caravan, audience members were allowed to submit a question. Stoops’ final question was about how he felt on the receiver situation.
