NORMAN — Robert Hale, a world-renowned bass-baritone and University of Oklahoma alumnus, will perform with the OU Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Friday in Catlett Music Center’s Sharp Concert Hall, 500 W Boyd St. The concert is part of the OU School of Music’s Sutton Concert Series.
Hale is best known for his Wagnerian roles as Wotan in the "Ring” cycle and the title role in "The Flying Dutchman.” He will perform the "Overture” and "Die Frist ist um” from "The Flying Dutchman,” as well as music from his other major roles. Jonathan Shames, director of orchestral activities, said members of the OU Symphony Orchestra are thrilled to be performing with Hale. "All around the world, music lovers flock to Mr. Hale’s performances, and his singing here must rank as one of our area’s not-to-be-missed musical events this year. We think his performing here will energize the students in their own work and give them a real sense of pride in their OU training,” Shames said. "He is one of the great Wagnerian singers of our time. We all anticipate an immensely moving and exciting evening.” Also featured at the concert will be violinist Nan Lu, one of four OU Concerto Competition winners. Lu will perform movements 2 and 3 of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The OU Symphony Orchestra is a 90-piece orchestra composed entirely of students, 90 percent of whom are music majors. Their repertoire ranges from light classics to symphonic masterpieces. Tickets for Friday’s concert are $8 for adults and $5 for students, faculty, staff and senior adults and may be purchased by calling 325-4101.
