OU football: Bob Stoops says Blake Bell remains the starting quarterback

Stoops: “I'm not gonna chance what we're doing with the quarterbacks.”

NORMAN — Blake Bell remains Oklahoma's starting quarterback, and Bob Stoops gave little indication Monday that the junior's seat is even lukewarm.

“I'm not gonna change what we're doing with the quarterbacks,” Stoops said.

Since taking over as starter in the Sooners' third game, Bell has looked really good at times, and pretty bad at others.

He completed just 15 of 35 pass attempts for 150 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Thursday's 41-12 loss at Baylor, where Oklahoma's offense was unable to do almost anything for most of the game.

“I'm not gonna grade it in front of everybody,” Stoops said when asked about Bell's performance in last Thursday's loss to Baylor. “It's been inconsistent. I think that's the fairest thing to say.”

By all accounts, sophomore Kendal Thompson was right in the thick of the preseason quarterback battle until a foot injury early in fall camp derailed his chances to be named Oklahoma's opening day starter.

Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight won the job, but he was replaced by Bell after struggling in the first two games and suffering a knee injury.

When Bell briefly left the Sooners' 35-21 win at Notre Dame with cramps, Knight was his temporary replacement.

Knight also got some work against Baylor in a special package designed to take advantage of his speed and athleticism.

Thompson, meanwhile, appears unlikely to see any action this late in the season, a fact that his father — former OU quarterback Charles Thompson — expressed public dismay over after the game Thursday.
