OU football coach Bob Stoops: Hope it's 'Home of the Brave' and nothing else

With the Air Force Academy coming to town, Bob Stoops wasted no time in his weekly press conference weighing in on the issue of Oklahoma fans shouting "Home of the SOONERS!" at the end of the National Anthem.

The University of Oklahoma is calling Saturday “Military Appreciation Day” for the Sooners' football game against the Air Force Academy.

Before the game, four jets will fly over the stadium, and OU coach Bob Stoops will give a special welcome to the cadets on the video board.

At halftime, the Air Force Band and the Pride of Oklahoma band will both perform, then be joined by the 200-person University Choir for a military salute.

At the end of the show, a C-17 from Altus Air Force Base will fly over the stadium.

But Stoops said the best way to show appreciation for the military is refrain from the OU tradition of singing “home of the SOONERS!” at the end of the national anthem.

“Hopefully, the people singing ‘Home of the Brave' can be louder and stronger than anybody singing ‘Home of the Sooners,'” Stoops said Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Stoops said he feels strong enough about the issue that he wouldn't be averse to filming a pregame video asking fans to cooperate.

“I'll do whatever they want to me to do,” Stoops said. “Whatever opportunity I get this week, I plan to express my opinion.”
