NORMAN — After a morning visit with Oklahoma coaches, former Missouri wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham has joined the Sooners, OU coach Bob Stoops said in a statement Thursday afternoon.
Green-Beckham will be eligible in 2015, although sources said OU will pursue an appeal with the NCAA to gain immediate eligibility.
"We are pleased to welcome Dorial to the University of Oklahoma, where he is excited to continue his education and resume his playing career," Stoops said. "Dorial understands the privilege and responsibilities of representing the Oklahoma football program. He is a talented young man who is eager to get to work with the rest of the team in the classroom and on the field."
With recruiting in a dead period, Green-Beckham had to sign a financial aid agreement in order to meet with Sooners coaches.
Green-Beckham was kicked off the Tigers after last season when he was investigated for a burglary in which he allegedly pushed a woman down several stairs at an apartment in Columbia. Green-Beckham was not charged in the incident.
During his tenure with Missouri, though, he was twice arrested for marijuana-related incidents.
“I appreciate this opportunity from Coach Stoops and the University of Oklahoma,” Green-Beckham said in a statement. “There are people here who will help me build a strong foundation. I’ve disappointed myself and others in the past. I know that I have a lot of work to do and I’m ready to get started. OU is a great program and I feel privileged to be part of it. The university has made the expectations clear and I want to live up to them and be a positive part of the campus and team. I also want to thank Coach Gary Pinkel and the University of Missouri.”
Green-Beckham was a five-star recruit and the nation’s top player in the 2012 recruiting class. The Sooners were in the hunt for Green-Beckham until very late in the process.
Green-Beckham was initially connected to a possible transfer to OU last month.
The waiver is not without precedent, as LSU basketball player Anthony Hickey recently received a waiver allowing him to play immediately at Oklahoma State.
In two seasons with the Tigers, Green-Beckham had 87 catches for 1,278 yards and 17 touchdowns.
In the SEC title game against Auburn, Green-Beckham had six catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
