OU football: Granger thriving despite injury

NORMAN — DeMarcus Granger let his teammates down last season when he was arrested for stealing a coat and sent home days before the Fiesta Bowl.

This season, the Oklahoma junior defensive tackle is doing the opposite.

After suffering ligament damage in his foot at Washington, doctors first thought Granger would need season-ending injury.

But they left the decision up to him.

It didn’t take long for him to decide.

Play though pain. Help his team.

"My first decision was not to do the surgery and my Mom and everybody always tells me to go with your first gut feeling. That was my first gut feeling and I felt like I made the right decision,” said Granger, who also battled back pain earlier in the year. "The way my injury showed up on the X-rays, from the time it happened to that Monday, it showed healing. When I saw that, my mind was made up."

Granger defied probability and returned to the field against Texas, two weeks sooner than initially predicted, and only three weeks after the injury.

"He could’ve easily laid it down for the season,” defensive tackle Adrian Taylor said. "You couldn’t have blamed him. It was a serious injury.”

But Granger hasn’t allowed the injury to keep him on the sideline.

Instead, he’s making a difference in the defensive tackle rotation, even though he still has to wear a protective boot away from the field to take pressure off his foot.

On the season, Granger has 14 tackles, 2 ½ tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.
