OU football Insider: Sooner recruits rank among best in country

NORMAN — Oklahoma’s 2010 recruiting class is just about complete, and the Sooners once again put together one of the top classes in the country.

"Look at it from a position standpoint,” said Jeremy Crabtree, national recruiting editor for Rivals.com, which currently ranks the Sooner class fifth nationally.

"They got a great quarterback, two stud running backs who are pretty special. They addressed a need at wide receiver. They would have liked to have landed another, but they landed two tight ends, five solid offensive linemen.”

Crabtree was just as high on OU’s defensive pick ups.

"They didn’t do a lot at linebacker, but linebacker wasn’t a huge need,” he said. "I like the defensive backs. And they have a number of guys who can play a bunch of different positions.

"Even without (Jackson) Jeffcoat, OU is not hurting for talent.”

More on the Sooners’ 2010 recruiting class:

Recruiter of the year: James Patton

The Sooner offensive line coach did a whale of a job replenishing OU’s depth and talent level on the offensive line by snagging commitments from the nation’s No. 3 (Bronson Irwin) and No. 13 (Adam Shead) guards, the No. 18 (Tyrus Thompson) and No. 32 (Daryl Williams) tackles and the No. 5 center (Austin Woods). Patton is still holding out hope of adding to that this week with the country’s No. 1 junior-college tackle, John Cullen (Fullerton, Calif.), who is down to deciding among OU, Utah, USC and Kansas State.

Blue-chippers: Tony Jefferson, Justin McCay

The best part of both Jefferson and McCay is that they could line up at a number of different positions and help you. Jefferson’s future, however, is at defensive back, while McCay was recruited to Norman to play wide receiver. Look for both top-flight athletes to make big contributions for the Sooners as early as next season.

Top prospect no one is talking about: Trey Millard

Only five OU commitments got a better Rivals rating than Millard (McCay, Jefferson, Roy Finch, Brennan Clay, Blake Bell), who remains somewhat under the radar. But make no mistake, the 6-foot-2, 245-pound tight end out of Columbia, Mo.
