NORMAN — Heading into the final 10 days of the 2010 recruiting season, Oklahoma claims 29 oral commitments. But the Sooners might not be done. OU is still looking to add at least one, maybe two players to a football class already being billed as one of the five best in the country. Here‘s who the Sooners are targeting:
Jackson Jeffcoat→Position: Defensive end →High school: Plano (Texas) West →Ht.: 6-5 →Wt.: 240 →Stars: Five →Rivals ranking: No. 12 overall →ESPN ranking: No. 2 overall →Who else he’s considering: Texas, Arizona State, Houston →The skinny: Texas coach Mack Brown swooped into Plano last week to try and secure a commitment from Jeffcoat before his scheduled official visit to OU this past weekend. Instead, Jeffcoat remained uncommitted and was spotted in Norman with coach Bob Stoops. Working in the Sooners’ favor is that Jeffcoat’s twin sister, Jacqueline, will be a member of the OU women’s basketball team next fall. Jeffcoat is expected to announce his commitment next Sunday night on a Dallas TV station. Count on this one going down to the wire.
John Cullen→Position: Offensive tackle →Junior college: Fullerton (Calif.) →Ht.: 6-6 →Wt.: 280 →Stars: Four →Rivals ranking: No. 3 overall junior-college prospect →ESPN ranking: N/A →Who else he’s considering: Tennessee, Arizona State, Utah, Kansas State, USC →The skinny: Cullen seemed destined for Tennessee, until coach Lane Kiffin bolted for USC. Initially, Cullen, a lifelong UCLA fan, wasn’t considering the Trojans. But that was before Kiffin announced over the weekend he was bringing former Vols offensive line coach James Cregg with him to USC. Cregg has developed a relationship with Cullen and was recruiting him to Tennessee. Now, Cregg could lure Cullen to USC. But OU, in need of a junior-college tackle, has made a strong push for Cullen and brought him to Norman for an official visit early last month. Cullen has said he will wait until at least signing day before making a decision.
Corey Nelson→Position: Outside linebacker →High school: Dallas Skyline →Ht.: 6-0 →Wt.: 210 →Stars: Four →Rivals ranking: No. 159 overall →ESPN ranking: No. 62 overall →Who else he’s considering: Texas A&M →The skinny: Nelson has been committed to Texas A&M since July, but that didn’t stop OU from talking him into taking an official visit to Norman this past weekend. About the only thing OU needs on the defensive side of this class is one more outside linebacker to go along with Aaron Franklin, and Nelson would give them that. Nelson could become a key late steal for the Sooners similar to cornerback Demontre Hurst, who last year switched his commitment from Oklahoma State to OU the week of signing day.
Damien Robinson→Position: Offensive tackle →High school: Olive Branch (Miss.) →Ht.: 6-8 →Wt.: 340 →Stars: Four →Rivals ranking: No. 168 overall →ESPN ranking: No. 104 overall →Who else he’s considering: Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Mississippi State →The skinny: OU already has five high school offensive linemen committed, but this past season proved a team can never have enough offensive linemen. Robinson, however, is more than just a spot filler. With his size, he has the upside to become a top-tier college tackle. Robinson took a visit to Mississippi State this past weekend and is scheduled to visit Tennessee this weekend. But OU remains very much in the mix for Robinson, who is expected to reveal his college destination on signing day.
