OU football: New Washington Redskins punter Tress Way had same mascot at Tulsa Union Published: September 1, 2014

New Washington Redskins punter Tress Way has been aspiring to his current position since his high school days at Tulsa Union.

But the former OU punter never thought he'd end up a Redskin again. Union's mascot is also the Redskin and while at the Tulsa prep power, Way and his teammates would chant "All my life I want to be a Redskin."

Way got his wish inadvertently, as he was cut by the Chicago Bears and picked up by Washington this week.

While his current team is mired in controversy over the use of the Redskins name and mascot, Way did not comment on the issue in a story by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Union has said it has no plans to change its mascot.

The Washington Redskins open the NFL season against the Houston Texans on Sunday at noon. Tulsa Union also opens its season in Texas against national power Southlake Carroll on Friday (8 p.m.) at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
