OU football notebook: Bob Stoops defends offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson
Published: October 6, 2009
Sooners set for 'Canes: OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson talks about preparing for Miami.
Head coach Bob Stoops came to the aid of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, who has been criticized by fans and media for being too conservative in his play-calling during Oklahoma’s 21-20 loss at Miami.
"Those people, I’m sure they’re good play-callers after the fact; they can call plays when they get their team,” Stoops told reporters after Monday’s practice. "Our game plan was what it had been all along; I don’t see where people get that. We went right down the field and scored on the first drive of the game. We were calling those same plays throughout the game. "They don’t look as good when they’re defended as well or you get a holding call out on the perimeter. I don’t see it that way. I thought we called the game the same really throughout.” Stoops was asked why after a long punt return in the fourth quarter the Sooners ran on six straight running plays before throwing a short swing pass on third-and-long to DeMarco Murray on OU’s final drive, which ended with a field goal instead of a much-needed touchdown. "Towards the end, we had been running the ball well,” Stoops said. "We do throw the bubble screen and end up slipping and losing 2 yards. But getting the ball to DeMarco on the perimeter, I don’t call that conservative.” For those who wanted more passing, Stoops brought up the second play of the second half, when a cornerback blitz forced Landry Jones to fumble, a turnover that one play later led to a Miami touchdown. "The other night, you drop back to throw the ball. ... we don’t pick up the blitz and the quarterback gets killed and they have the ball,” Stoops said. "That’s what passing the ball did for us on the (second) play of the second half.” Stoops also scoffed at the notion that Wilson’s play-calling ended up costing OU the game. Said Stoops: "That’s ridiculous. I can’t even believe that. A lot of people, that’s their opinions. We have one of those jobs that everybody knows how to do. He’s obviously been dealt a difficult hand with all that’s happened, and in the end, he’s the same guy he was a year ago. "People want to look for excuses. But in the end, (Miami) just out-executed us.”BROYLES INJURY NOT AS SERIOUS
Slot receiver Ryan Broyles is expected to miss some time after fracturing his left shoulder blade on the Sooners’ second play from scrimmage against Miami.
But Stoops said Monday the fracture isn’t as serious as first thought and Broyles should be out only 2-4 weeks, instead of the original projection of 4-6 weeks.
"Just a hairline fracture that isn’t displaced or anything,” Stoops said. "We’ll just have to see.”
Coming into last weekend, Broyles was leading the nation with seven touchdown grabs. He injured the shoulder on a 37-yard reception that eventually led to a Sooner touchdown. Broyles played with the injury for a few plays, but eventually was taken to the locker room.
With Broyles out, wide receivers coach Jay Norvell indicated Monday that speedy true freshman wideout Jaz Reynolds would play more, with Brandon Caleb swinging over some to the slot.
BEAL EARNS BIG 12 HONORS
Even in a losing effort, defensive end Jeremy Beal earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Beal came through with his second monster outing, recording three sacks for the second consecutive game. He also added five tackles and knocked down two passes against Miami.
Beal is now third in the nation in sacks. He is also eighth nationally with eight tackles for loss.

Stoops still thinks he know's defense, WRONG, he's cluless as this season and past, back to
when his brother left, will be proof. Last season Arizona had better Def. Stats. than OU by
a bunch, OU was 68th, AZ. was well above by 20 to 25 teams, and as you know, during
bowl season the PAC 10 was undefeated in Bowls. Wilson was brought in to score fast
and often, because he, Stoops, ands his crony, Venables, can't stop anybody. Notice how
good his defense was when was hired and what it is now! His best defense's were with
Blakes players and Mike's. Now he and Venables are in charge and they are going down
the toilet. No emotion from the sidelines on defense by Stoops or Venables, Mike was
fired up for his boy's. Wilson is in the press box with one thumb up his a** and one in
his mouth, and every quarter he swithc's them. You make the call!
The defense wasn't good last year.
Bradford was so good in that offense he just executed better than the other team's offense.
Kevin Wilson could have sent any play down to Bradford and he executed it perfectly.
You find out how good your coaches are when you don't have the talent level that in the past has bailed you out of close games.
The defense has been going down for a few years.
Its clear that the coaches in place now aren't the level that Stoops came in with.
Stoops is totally responsible for all of the coaches and when they aren't getting it done he is suppose to step up and clean things up.
The problem is, Stoops doesn't think he has a problem.
So nothing is going to change.
Hopefully when this team goes under 500 for the year maybe something will get done.
Injuries, recruiting and preparation are all part of the game.
Suck it up and get things done Stoops or get out!!!!
As far as the Texas idiot, I remember the message boards when you guys weren't winning the games you were suppose to be winning. You Texas fans were crying like babies and calling for the coaches head.
The same coach you have right now!!
What an idiot!!
Yeah, he couldn't call a tight/big game last year either, or the year before, or the year before, Big Game Boob.
The injuries are an excuse Bob. You're wonderful, no respect earning OC stated earlier this year that this offensive line was better than last years. So who's lying? Wilson or our eyes?
OU will never win another NC with the current coaching staff intact. These guys don't know how to win big games and Bob you have forgotten what it takes.
Bob, I don't want to intrude into your domain, but just for your information, the opposing tight end is open.
Jumping Offsides
Offensive Holding
Losing away from home to ranked teams (Didn't Switzer say something along the lines of that the team with the best athletes win?). So BYU and Miami had the better atheletes when they played us?
All these things come back to coaching. This is OU we don't rebuild we reload. I am not saying fire the coaches, that is stupid. However, something has to change. Remember last year when the
O-Line couldn't run block and then they seemed to figure something out?
One would think that you would learn from this mistake and keep it from happening again.
They can't tell how a player will perform until game time? Seems like a bit of a cop out to me. These guys are supposed to be at the top of the football ladder in terms of coaches.
I agree with the previous poster that it is about heart and determination. Those guys in 2000 won because they were tried of losing. I watched the spring practices back then and they were quite intense; players double-timed everywhere. I have noticed that since the 2000 year the intensity has dropped a bit in the spring practices. I don't know how they practice behind closed doors, but I definitely saw a difference after the 2000 NC.
I like the coaches and I know they can do better than this. This is Oklahoma Football and I am getting sick and tired of hearing Chokelahoma.
And this last poster is probably right. Unless there are key injuries for UT before the game, if we play like we did at Miami we will lose.
C'mon coaches clean it up!!! This is Oklahoma football!!!
It is quite evident that the OU coaches aren't getting it done!!
If Stoops can't get it done, its time to move on!!
Too much money is being paid for what I have been watching.
OU's choices of coaches in the past has been ridiculous!!
Make the change and go get a coach on the level of the SEC coaches.
This is RIDICULOUS!!
