Sooners set for 'Canes: OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson talks about preparing for Miami.

Head coach Bob Stoops came to the aid of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, who has been criticized by fans and media for being too conservative in his play-calling during Oklahoma’s 21-20 loss at Miami.

"Those people, I’m sure they’re good play-callers after the fact; they can call plays when they get their team,” Stoops told reporters after Monday’s practice. "Our game plan was what it had been all along; I don’t see where people get that. We went right down the field and scored on the first drive of the game. We were calling those same plays throughout the game.

"They don’t look as good when they’re defended as well or you get a holding call out on the perimeter. I don’t see it that way. I thought we called the game the same really throughout.”

Stoops was asked why after a long punt return in the fourth quarter the Sooners ran on six straight running plays before throwing a short swing pass on third-and-long to DeMarco Murray on OU’s final drive, which ended with a field goal instead of a much-needed touchdown.

"Towards the end, we had been running the ball well,” Stoops said. "We do throw the bubble screen and end up slipping and losing 2 yards. But getting the ball to DeMarco on the perimeter, I don’t call that conservative.”

For those who wanted more passing, Stoops brought up the second play of the second half, when a cornerback blitz forced Landry Jones to fumble, a turnover that one play later led to a Miami touchdown.

"The other night, you drop back to throw the ball. ... we don’t pick up the blitz and the quarterback gets killed and they have the ball,” Stoops said. "That’s what passing the ball did for us on the (second) play of the second half.”

Stoops also scoffed at the notion that Wilson’s play-calling ended up costing OU the game.

Said Stoops: "That’s ridiculous. I can’t even believe that. A lot of people, that’s their opinions. We have one of those jobs that everybody knows how to do. He’s obviously been dealt a difficult hand with all that’s happened, and in the end, he’s the same guy he was a year ago.

"People want to look for excuses. But in the end, (Miami) just out-executed us.”

BROYLES INJURY NOT AS SERIOUS
Slot receiver Ryan Broyles is expected to miss some time after fracturing his left shoulder blade on the Sooners’ second play from scrimmage against Miami.

But Stoops said Monday the fracture isn’t as serious as first thought and Broyles should be out only 2-4 weeks, instead of the original projection of 4-6 weeks.

"Just a hairline fracture that isn’t displaced or anything,” Stoops said. "We’ll just have to see.”

Coming into last weekend, Broyles was leading the nation with seven touchdown grabs. He injured the shoulder on a 37-yard reception that eventually led to a Sooner touchdown. Broyles played with the injury for a few plays, but eventually was taken to the locker room.

With Broyles out, wide receivers coach Jay Norvell indicated Monday that speedy true freshman wideout Jaz Reynolds would play more, with Brandon Caleb swinging over some to the slot.

BEAL EARNS BIG 12 HONORS
Even in a losing effort, defensive end Jeremy Beal earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Beal came through with his second monster outing, recording three sacks for the second consecutive game. He also added five tackles and knocked down two passes against Miami.

Beal is now third in the nation in sacks. He is also eighth nationally with eight tackles for loss.

At present, Keving Wilson and Brent Venables are causing once upon a time "Big Game Bob" to suffer from dwarfism.

Here's the deal on Wilson. Stoops depends on his Co's to bail him out, except for defense,
Stoops still thinks he know's defense, WRONG, he's cluless as this season and past, back to
when his brother left, will be proof. Last season Arizona had better Def. Stats. than OU by
a bunch, OU was 68th, AZ. was well above by 20 to 25 teams, and as you know, during
bowl season the PAC 10 was undefeated in Bowls. Wilson was brought in to score fast
and often, because he, Stoops, ands his crony, Venables, can't stop anybody. Notice how
good his defense was when was hired and what it is now! His best defense's were with
Blakes players and Mike's. Now he and Venables are in charge and they are going down
the toilet. No emotion from the sidelines on defense by Stoops or Venables, Mike was
fired up for his boy's. Wilson is in the press box with one thumb up his a** and one in
his mouth, and every quarter he swithc's them. You make the call!

Alvin, Mesquite: You just keep on dreaming. We may be down and discouraged, but even on a bad day we can still whomp Texas..HaHa!!!
Boomer, Washington - Oct 7, 2009 at 1:51 pm
If Stoops doesn't think we should have taken at least one shot to the end zone to win the game then he's as big an idiot as Wilson. It's like he doesn't want to win. Yeah, they have tough jobs, but sometimes fb coaches outthing themselves. Watch any game on TV and you won't see a more conservative approach than what we took. No excuses.

Jihdee your right I thought the same thing if I could tell what they were going to run surely Miama knew what was coming. He has become a Tom Landry of the Cowboys it got to the point that everyone knew what was coming. I even told my wife they were going to run a fake field goal. The reason he has done well in the past is because of the great player's OU had. If he is so good why isn't he a head coach somewhere.
larry, hallsville - Oct 7, 2009 at 10:03 am
What's hilarious to me is that people think we'd end up with Blake, Schnelly or Gibbs again if we changed staffs. News flash, gang; there's a whole pile of good young coaches out there that win and have similar talent at much smaller schools.
Chris, Hesston - Oct 7, 2009 at 8:46 am
I'm not sayin wilson totally sucks or is totally predictable, but if I'm @ home or @ a bar watchin the game & I can tell yOU what play OU is gonna run, then don't yOU think an opposin defensive coor & players know what play is comin? No play action, no misdirection, no stretchin the field? If it's not wilson' fault, then who's is it? If we gonna suck like this, I say bring back blake or schnelly. At least then we know we sucked! It's even worse to think yOUr team is a title contender, but it is a fraud & the butt of every joke! Move over suckeyes! OU is now the atlanta brave & the buffalo bills all rolled into 1. I agree with Tony. It's easy to win with superior talent, but when that playin field is level it all comes down to coachin. So what are yOU, bradford & gresham are the reason we are better than byu? We shOUld be DEEP @ every position, since this is OKLAHOMA. What's up with all these yOUng receivers we supposedly had waitin to play when we ran jarboe OUtta town. Weren't owen & miller high school all americans? if wilson & stoops don't feel the players we have left can execute the game plan, then why the hell are they on scholarship?!?!
Jiohdee, atlanta - Oct 7, 2009 at 7:03 am
Let's get real about this coaching staff. Take Bradford out of the picture last year and we don't even come close to the NC game.
The defense wasn't good last year.
Bradford was so good in that offense he just executed better than the other team's offense.
Kevin Wilson could have sent any play down to Bradford and he executed it perfectly.
You find out how good your coaches are when you don't have the talent level that in the past has bailed you out of close games.
The defense has been going down for a few years.
Its clear that the coaches in place now aren't the level that Stoops came in with.
Stoops is totally responsible for all of the coaches and when they aren't getting it done he is suppose to step up and clean things up.
The problem is, Stoops doesn't think he has a problem.
So nothing is going to change.
Hopefully when this team goes under 500 for the year maybe something will get done.
Injuries, recruiting and preparation are all part of the game.
Suck it up and get things done Stoops or get out!!!!
As far as the Texas idiot, I remember the message boards when you guys weren't winning the games you were suppose to be winning. You Texas fans were crying like babies and calling for the coaches head.
The same coach you have right now!!
What an idiot!!

Robert in his press conference Tuesday Stoops says thew injuries make things tougher but says "that cannot be an excuse". I know many have a "what have you done for me lately" approach but Stoops has won several big games the alst few years.; Mizzou twice in 07, Tech, OSU, Mizzou in 09. You cant get to the great big games unless you win the big ones that come before it.
Richard, Visalia - Oct 6, 2009 at 10:37 pm
I personally think Stoops really doesn't care about winning. I have heard him say in interviews that there is more to life than winning, if that is the case, maybe he should find another line of work. I don't think he is being paid all those millions just to be a Good Samaritan.

I guess the statement I have the most problem with is this one:

Said Stoops: "That’s ridiculous. I can’t even believe that. A lot of people, that’s their opinions. We have one of those jobs that everybody knows how to do. He’s obviously been dealt a difficult hand with all that’s happened, and in the end, he’s the same guy he was a year ago.

Yeah, he couldn't call a tight/big game last year either, or the year before, or the year before, Big Game Boob.

The injuries are an excuse Bob. You're wonderful, no respect earning OC stated earlier this year that this offensive line was better than last years. So who's lying? Wilson or our eyes?
OU will never win another NC with the current coaching staff intact. These guys don't know how to win big games and Bob you have forgotten what it takes.

Bob, I don't want to intrude into your domain, but just for your information, the opposing tight end is open.
Robert, Dallas - Oct 6, 2009 at 8:18 pm
What I meant was the same keys defenders read work for several of the plays OU runs.
Richard, Visalia - Oct 6, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Ed and Jim, interesting observations. I know its tough to get over the disappointments. Jim you said something kind of interesting about how the run game clicked late last year. It will be interesting to see how this team progresses from game to game. I too have been critical of some of the play calling. The opening drive of this game reminded me alot of the opening drive against USC and Texas last year where we just moved the ball at will, showed some new wrinkles...and then.....nothing. I have wondered if the defenses made adjustments and took that away or if Wilson thinks a new or creative play works only one time. That role out to the left and throw to Broyles was executed to perfection and we never saw it again. Wilson has probably forgotten more football than most of us will ever learn, but the dude does seem to nut up as a close game goes on. Sometimes players are game time performers: dont show much in practice but in a game they are a whole new person (ala Marcus Dupree. Why doesnt he use the same approach to the WRs as he did the O-line? Rotate guys in and out until you find the next play maker or the right combo. I agree if the old stuff is working then try some new stuff, but Stoops and WIlson will likely keep up the older style and hope it catches on sooner or later. I still think the keys defenders read in our offense are too obvious or the same keys work for the same plays. Evidence of this is how well teams stop OU in bowl games and how several of us who watch OU play and have an iota of football knowledge can call the play just by looking at the formation and personal lined up. But what can we do? I just hope Heupel does not leave for an OC job before Wilson leaves.
Richard, Visalia - Oct 6, 2009 at 7:39 pm
We all don't want to lose to ranked teams when we play away from home and hope it doesn't continue! Let's go undefeated every year! Is that wishful thinking?
Janet, Oklahoma City - Oct 6, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Steve: Did you actually read any of the posts before you responded? If you will look about 80% are not calling for anyone to get rid of the coaching staff. However, most would like to see some acknowledgment and accountability from the coaching staff. Teams will lose. But, to lose as consistently in close games as this staff has perfected is a sure sign that something is wrong.
Scott, Austin - Oct 6, 2009 at 6:16 pm
I will be the first to admit that I don't know a lot about football, but this losing to ranked teams away from home is a bad trend.

Jumping Offsides
Offensive Holding
Losing away from home to ranked teams (Didn't Switzer say something along the lines of that the team with the best athletes win?). So BYU and Miami had the better atheletes when they played us?

All these things come back to coaching. This is OU we don't rebuild we reload. I am not saying fire the coaches, that is stupid. However, something has to change. Remember last year when the
O-Line couldn't run block and then they seemed to figure something out?
One would think that you would learn from this mistake and keep it from happening again.

They can't tell how a player will perform until game time? Seems like a bit of a cop out to me. These guys are supposed to be at the top of the football ladder in terms of coaches.

I agree with the previous poster that it is about heart and determination. Those guys in 2000 won because they were tried of losing. I watched the spring practices back then and they were quite intense; players double-timed everywhere. I have noticed that since the 2000 year the intensity has dropped a bit in the spring practices. I don't know how they practice behind closed doors, but I definitely saw a difference after the 2000 NC.

I like the coaches and I know they can do better than this. This is Oklahoma Football and I am getting sick and tired of hearing Chokelahoma.

And this last poster is probably right. Unless there are key injuries for UT before the game, if we play like we did at Miami we will lose.

C'mon coaches clean it up!!! This is Oklahoma football!!!

So all you smart "coaches" want us to get rid of the same group of coaches that led us to the National Championship 9 months ago???!! Get real people... Appreciate what you have.
Steve, Euless - Oct 6, 2009 at 5:50 pm
You OU Gooners are so stupid, it has nothing to do with coaching. It's called lack of talent on the O-line and at receiver. Your O-line next year will be this same group minus your left tackle. Get used to losing to Texas for the next 5 - 7 years. Your getting your ass kick by Texas in recruiting and coaching. Oct 17 is coming, no where to hide Gooner fans. Hook'em.
Alvin, Mesquite - Oct 6, 2009 at 5:37 pm
It is silly that people are making excuses for Wilson based on a young O line. Wilson had one of the best O lines in the nation a year ago and couldn't coordinate touch downs on the goal line against a smaller quicker Gator D. I would like to hear Switzer's opinion on how Bob is running the Gloomy Sooners. Would Switzer show Wilson the door or demote him to TE coach? Would Switzer show Venables the door or demote him to LB coach?
Titan, Winchester - Oct 6, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Even a good coaching staff might need some change after several years. There's a lot of good talented coaches that would kill to have a chance at OU. Stoops needs to re-evaluate his staff and make adjustments. Mike Stoops, Mangino, Leach... all had passion and brought that fire. Stoops's teams last several years have lacked that on the side lines. Stop being so arrogant and stubborn, admit there's a problem and fix it as a head coach should do.

It all goes back to the head coach. If the other coaches aren't doing the things to prepare the players to perform during the game at their highest level then the head coach has to step in and either make changes or get it right.
It is quite evident that the OU coaches aren't getting it done!!
If Stoops can't get it done, its time to move on!!
Too much money is being paid for what I have been watching.
OU's choices of coaches in the past has been ridiculous!!
Make the change and go get a coach on the level of the SEC coaches.
This is RIDICULOUS!!

I've been a OU fan since Darrel Royal was quarterbacking the team and I can say from experience that Wilkinson did'nt win em all, Fairbanks did'nt, and Switzer did'nt. I think Bob Stoops has done a lot more for OU than just win games. I don't think he needs to be fired; just maybe quit coaching defensive back and hire a coach to do it. I don't know if he chews on his staff if not maybe he needs to deliver a swift kick in the butt to the defensive coaches. I think thats where the team has let down in the last 4-5 years. Think Gibbs, Schelly, and Blake before you think about firing anyone.
