MILLARD STILL WVU'S STARTER
West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said Monday that Paul Millard is still his starting quarterback after the Mountaineers' season-opening 24-17 win over William & Mary.
Millard emerged from a preseason quarterback battle with Florida State transfer Clint Trickett and took 65 snaps Saturday, compared to only six for Trickett.
Millard completed 19 of 25 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's come-from-behind win.
“I still think Clint brings something to the table that (Millard) doesn't, so we will continue to rep Clint,” Holgorsen said on Monday's Big 12 Coaches' Teleconference.
Millard's 25 pass attempts were the fewest by a Holgorsen starting quarterback since he became a Division I football coach in 2000.
Senior running back Brennan Clay, on the Sooners' defense:
“A lot of people talked trash last year, talking about how we gave up too many points and the defense is soft. I knew what we were capable of. … I feel like with this unit we finally have it gelled. They're playing as one. Expect a lot more shutouts, I feel like.”
