Both linebacker Corey Nelson and defensive lineman Jordan Phillips underwent surgeries Tuesday after suffering season-ending injuries recently.

Nelson tore his pectoral muscle in the Sooners win over TCU but delayed his surgery for a week so that he could be with the team during last Saturday's game against Texas. He is a senior.

Phillips sat out the last two games with what Sooners coach Bob Stoops said was a genetic issue.

Monday, Stoops said that Phillips, a redshirt sophomore, would need to have surgery for a back problem.

Stoops said Wednesday that both players' surgeries had been successful.

Nelson had 24 tackles, a sack and an interception return for a touchdown before his injury.

Phillips had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks and had been a force at nose guard for the Sooners.

Junior defensive lineman Quincy Russell, who was highly touted coming out of Trinity Valley Community College, hasn't played in the last three games, even after Phillips was injured.

Russell arrived late in preseason camp and Sooners coaches said this week that Russell was still behind.

“I think it's just consistency with any young player,” defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “They're going to be inconsistent and him being here so late, trying to get caught up.”

With Phillips out, Jordan Wade has started at nose guard with Torrea Peterson spending time at the spot as well.
