OU football notebook: Defensive backs' ‘shark' attack

The most entertaining clip from ESPN's “Oklahoma, All Access” segments that aired last week was OU's defensive backs comparing themselves to sharks.

“They're ruthless,” said linebacker Travis Lewis. “They're fast. They're looking for any sign of blood because once they see it, they're going to go after it and devour it.”

ESPN shows nickelback Tony Jefferson and safety Aaron Colvin talking smack in the locker room, their hands placed on their foreheads, the sign for being a shark.

Surrounded by his buddies, Jefferson barks: “When we bite, it hurts! You feel it! Helmets will be coming off! And there will be blood! We smell blood. ... Ryan Broyles, you don't want to come across the middle.”

During a practice, Colvin points to the wide receivers: “See that fish over there. That's what we eat, right there. We love that. That's soul food.”

Broyles' rebuttal: “They call themselves the sharks. I'm not sure what that really means. They don't kick. They don't bite. Well they bite on play action. They bite on double moves.”

Junior defensive tackle Stacy Walker started the first four games last season but missed the next six with a severely sprained knee. Walker was injured on a cut block while pursuing Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros. Replays showed it was a cheap shot.

“I was in the backfield chasing (Collaros) and the center came out of nowhere and hit me dead off in my knee. ... It swelled up like a pumpkin,” Walker said. “I knew something was wrong. I flipped in the air. I'm 300 (pounds). You don't do that.”

Walker returned two months later and played with pain late in the season. This offseason, he strengthened the knee.

“I'm all good now,” Walker said. “You can't dwell on the past. What happened last year happened last year. I wish I hadn't gotten hurt and missed the majority of the season, but you have to move forward. My mindset is it's the 2011 season and we're going to get after it.”
