OU football notebook: No punishment for Ryan Broyles

Sophomore receiver Ryan Broyles wasn’t assigned any extra conditioning as punishment for releasing details of quarterback Sam Bradford’s return.

After Bradford returned to practice last Monday, Broyles said he saw the Heisman Trophy winner throwing short passes, prompting coach Bob Stoops to say he was "disappointed” some of his players had so much to say about the return.

"I can’t say anything now, I learned my lesson,” Broyles said. "But he didn’t address anybody by name, he just said overall.”

Stoops remained tight-lipped about Bradford’s status again on Monday, but this time, his players followed suit.

SLIM AND FAST
Freshman right guard Tyler Evans came to campus weighing 324 pounds. By the time preseason camp started, he was down to 320.

Nearly four weeks into the season, Evans is down to 306 pounds.

"I was actually wanting to be about 320 to kind of give me some leverage, but it makes me run faster, so it makes me faster off the ball,” Evans said.

The good news is nothing is off limits for dinner.

"I can eat basically what I want, because I just work it right off,” Evans said.

Asked his favorite food, Evans didn’t have to think long.

"Steak,” he said, almost before the reporter could finish asking the question.

CATCHING ON
Junior Mossis Madu made the transition to receiver from running back during spring practice for more playing time and touches.

Through three games, he hasn’t received either. Madu has just three catches for 22 yards, and two carries for no gain.

Madu will have to prove he can be reliable outside of the backfield to break into the rotation at receiver.

"I think it’s more of a trust factor, knowing that I got all the plays down, the route system, reading the DBs out there,” Madu said.

While he believes he has a basic understanding of those things, he says his lack of receiving instincts that have kept him off the field.

"Just running, making cuts at the right depth,” he said. "The little things you learn growing up playing receiver.”

Who's brilliant idea was it to put these sports writers on camera?

The video clips are wearing me out. They all look and act like News9 wannabe's. Just get the nouns and verbs correct. Throw in an occasional adjective. But don't try to be "hollywood."

Why would a coach disipline a player about what he saw Sam doing. The players know
Buffalo Bob is not in charge of the Sam situation, Sam's insurer and Sam are. Is Bob taking
sides with the Insurance company. Stoops needs to worry about beating Miami, Bradford
will take care of his self. Bob has brought all these problems on OU and his self by
not making staff changes and being envolved with his players during the season, Bomar
to single one out. All that salary OU pumps out to him has gone to his head, he's out of
touch. When OU gets their but kicked in Miami in Prime Time, it will just another cover
up by the DO and Bennett, who's wife's name is on the Stadium. OU is not the tradition
people are paying for at this time.

Brad - Yes, Kevin Wilson is the biggest concern for the rest of the season. Landry Jones is doing a great job in Bradford's absence.

These headlines were deceiving! Broyles wasn't in trouble! Let's keep it a secret on how Sam is doing and scare Miami! Just kidding.

Silly title. The notion that he would be punished is silly. Or at least I think it is. From reading Madu's statement, sounds like he saying "hey I ain't a receiver, and it's really too late to be switching." I think he deserves at least five touches a game.

Brad, Kevin Wilson was the assistant coach of the year last year, his offense was the most productive of all time in College football, and you know more than he does? Give me a break.

Maybe we should hand it to Eldridge.

There can only be so many hand-offs in a game. Take carries away from Brown and Murray and isn't that wasted talent?

I think it's garbage that they moved Madu to receiver anyways - he's an excellent running back. Give him some freaking carries. Kevin Wilson better get his head out of his ass Saturday - can we be creative? Have we ever once given Matt Clapp a freaking carry near the goal line? No. That is a wasted talent.
