OU football notebook: Quarterback Landry Jones wouldn't turn down NFL millions

BY MIKE BALDWIN, Staff Writer, Published: July 26, 2011

Projected to be a first round NFL Draft pick next April, quarterback Landry Jones was asked if he would consider turning down millions of dollars to be a pastor, one of his life goals.

"The money wouldn't be a factor but it's like my field," Jones said. "If you're a great artist why would you turn down a contract to go into the art field? If I'm not using my talents; I don't have this talent for any reason. God gave me this talent to use so I'm going to use it.

"If somebody drafts me I'm not going to turn that down. It would be a blessing from the Lord if he's rewarding me with that. I definitely have a goal but that would be my ministry."

Jones declined to talk about future wedding plans with OU women's basketball star Whitney Hand or speculate on his future.

"We'll see how it plays out whether I'm a pastor, a chaplain. Whatever God calls me to do I'm going to do it," Jones said. "Right now it's the leader of the University of Oklahoma (football team)."

On Monday, five Texas A&M players and coach Mike Sherman declined interview requests from the Texas Longhorn Network. On Tuesday, OU's three players and coach Bob Stoops all conducted interviews with TLN.

Senior linebacker Travis Lewis said he someday hopes to start his own version of TLN — the Travis Lewis Network.

"I hate the color burnt orange but we respect them," Lewis said. "Someday when I want to interview some Texas Longhorns I want them to show the same courtesy."

Lewis said his network would feature a wide variety of subjects including bizarre topics like alligator wrestling.

Senior cornerback Jamell Fleming, second in the nation in passes defended (19) last season, returned to school this summer after missing spring drills.

Stoops was asked if Fleming fell behind the five months he was away from the program.

"We're not much on handing anybody anything in our program," Stoops said. "Just because you're here doesn't mean you get to start. At the end of the day we'll see what kind of shape he's in. He has to keep earning it.
