OU football notebook: Ronnell Lewis still in limbo; Travis Lewis still in limbo

His eligibility in question for Saturday's season opener, junior defensive end Ronnell Lewis has defended his academics on Facebook, stating fans don't know the whole story.

“They don't know,” said coach Bob Stoops. “When I know something definitive I'll say something about it. I'm not going to debate it here and broadcast his situation until we know what it is. It's just not fair to him. He deserves some privacy, doesn't he?

“You're asking me to talk about grades, this, that and the other, but he's a college student. If he was in the NFL, I'd talk about whatever it is. He's not. He's a student on top of being a player. He deserves that (privacy).”

TRAVIS LEWIS STILL IN A CAST

Linebacker Travis Lewis suffered a broken toe the third day of two-a-days. He's projected to be out eight weeks.

Lewis tweeted he plans to return Sept. 17 for Florida State, but he's still in a cast.

Is it feasible Lewis could return in two weeks?

“I can't answer that. Doctors can,” Stoops said. “Whatever he is saying now is totally hopeful because they haven't evaluated him since they put him in a cast. There will be different stages of evaluation that might shed some light on that. But (saying) anything right now is too early.”

ALTERNATING BOX'S NO. 12 JERSEY

To honor linebacker Austin Box, who died in May, a different player each week will wear No. 12. Stoops will announce each Friday which player will wear Box's number for the upcoming game. Travis Lewis, assisted by Landry Jones, will play a key role on which players wear No. 12.

SOONERS RECRUITED KINNE

Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne led TU in rushing last season. The 235-pound Kinne is tough to bring down. The Sooners recruited Kinne as a linebacker.

"That shows the kind of toughness we felt he had, the instincts we felt he had," said defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "It's shown over time he's a really good football player ... There's a reason he was the Conference (USA) Player of the Year."
