NORMAN — The look on Oklahoma cornerback Demontre Hurst's face says quite a bit. He looks like someone just wafted months-old trash, or something worse, in front of his nose.
What could cause such a physical reaction? Oh. Texas Tech came up.
It's still a touchy subject for the Sooners (8-1), now a month removed from their only loss. ESPN analysts on Sunday night called the 41-38 upset “the most puzzling result of the college football season.” Host Rece Davis added it was “inexplicable.”
Those feelings are shared inside the Switzer Center, as well.
“It just makes me sick,” Hurst said. “It's just crazy. It makes me mad. I know we're way better than them. Everybody's beating them except for us. It happened, so we have to (deep sigh) let that one go.”
What is making the moving-on process more difficult for OU is the fact that everyone has hammered the Red Raiders since Oct. 22.
Iowa State went to Lubbock as a big underdog and won 41-7.
A trip to Texas the next week was no better for Tech. The Longhorns, fueled by a 28-point second quarter, won 52-20.
Last week, Oklahoma State led 49-0 at halftime in Lubbock on the way to a 66-6 blasting.
That's 159-33 in those three losses.
“Other teams have pretty much just dominated them,” Hurst said. “Everybody's playing hard and executing their plays. I think we could have done the same thing. We were just a little off track, and they took full advantage and came and handed it to us.”
Sooners receiver Kenny Stills said he was watching OSU-Tech until the Red Raiders couldn't even field a kickoff. It bounced off one return man, through the hands of another – and became a terribly easy Cowboys score to make it 35-0.
Stills turned the channel.
“It's embarrassing for us to have a loss like that,” Stills said. “Every team has a breakdown, but a lot of people are talking trash to us and giving us a hard time about that. That's embarrassing, but it happens sometimes.
“I don't think we need any fuel considering the fact we've lost a game already.”
Coach Bob Stoops was upbeat during his news conference Tuesday – until Tech came up, near the end.
