Two-minute drill

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables is not ready to name a starter at middle linebacker, and says it remains a three-way competition between junior Austin Box, freshman Tom Wort and sophomore Daniel Franklin. ... Sophomore Javon Harris is currently backing up Jonathan Nelson at safety. ... After a stint at cornerback during the spring, sophomore Marcus Trice is back at safety. Trice is vying for time at nickelback along with Tony Jefferson and Joe Ibiloye. If the season started today, Jefferson would be the starter at nickel. ... Freshman Aaron Colvin continues to impress at corner. Said defensive backs coach Willie Martinez: "He's playing with a lot of confidence. He has a lot of ball skills, instincts." Still, sophomore Gabe Lynn appears to have the inside track to be OU's top corner off the sideline behind starters Jamell Fleming and Demontre Hurst.

Quotable

Venables on Adrian Taylor: "We're just bringing him along slowly for obvious reasons. We're just giving him what he can handle and not try to overwhelm him, or subject him to any setbacks."
