NORMAN — Connecticut doesn't exactly have the staunchest of football traditions. And Oklahoma and Connecticut have never met on the gridiron before.
So The Oklahoman quizzed Sooner defensive end Jeremy Beal, receiver Ryan Broyles, safety Quinton Carter, guard Gabe Ikard, quarterback Landry Jones, running back DeMarco Murray, safety Jonathan Nelson and wide receiver Kenny Stills to see what they actually know about their upcoming Fiesta Bowl opponent.
The top students were Ikard, Jones and Nelson, who each got seven of the 10 questions correct.
1. What is Connecticut's mascot?
Beal, Carter, Ikard, Jones and Stills correctly answered “Huskies.†Murray was close, but had Nebraska still on his mind, guessing “Huskers.†Nelson initially said “Huskers†but quickly recovered with the right answer. We gave him credit. Broyles didn't have any idea.
2. Oklahoma is referred to as OU. What is Connecticut usually referred to?
All eight players got “UConn†right.
3. What conference does UConn play in?
All eight got “Big East†correct.
4. What are UConn's official colors?
All eight were close enough. Nitpicking, Beal, Ikard, Jones, Nelson and Stills were most right with “blue and white.†Murray went with “navy blue.†Carter said “Navy blue, silver, white.†Broyles answered with “blue and gray.â€
5. Who is their coach?
Randy Edsall needs a better publicist because nobody got this one right. Only Murray ventured an actual guess with “isn't it like Al something?†which was actually not that far off. Al Golden, who last week took a job with Miami, coached Temple to victory over UConn this season. Nelson declared he knew Edsall's face but couldn't place the name. Stills didn't know who coached UConn football, but correctly offered up the name of the women's basketball coach: “Geno Auriemma.â€
