The Oklahoman’s Stephanie Kuzydym took questions from readers in today’s OU Power Lunch Chat. You can join our Power Lunch Chats Monday-Friday at 11 a.m. on NewsOK.com/Sports. Here’s a look at today’s Q&A.
ON OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL:
What do the OU football players have to say about the QB competition? Has anyone taken a commanding lead?
They won't give an inch on who has taken a commanding lead or not. Nobody will. They're under strict orders not to say much about it so they give pretty vague answers. Sterling Shepard said he doesn't even pay attention to who the ball is coming from unless it’s a certain route and he can tell it's coming from "the left-hander" as everyone liked to say yesterday. So all they will really say about it is that it will be announced when the time comes. Even when they were asked if the media makes too big a deal about it, they gave a vague answer. That's how Bob wants it.
Will the linebackers improve under Kish?
I think no matter what, the linebackers are going to be better. They are going to be focused on. Mike Stoops stressed that last year one person looked over too many people.
Do you think that Tim Kish is on a short leash?
I think if he was, he would have gone when Stoops was making changes. Is it shorter than the new guys’? Maybe. But if Stoops had major problems with him, I don't see why he wouldn't have cleaned the defensive house more and included Kish.
Coach Kish said that he only has 6 LB to work with. He didn't include P.L. Lindley or Rashard Favors. Will these players no longer be playing LB?
Lindley is listed as a defensive end — as is Favors. So it looks like those will fall to Jerry Montgomery.
Are you covering recruiting? If so, do recruits have a different vibe with the new coaches?
I am not covering recruiting, but from talking to the new coaches, they seem to be extremely open to conversation and building relationships.
ON OKLAHOMA BASKETBALL:
Is Ryan Spangler really that good?
If you're referring to his physicality, then yes. He's really aggressive. His arms are usually covered in scratch marks because he's not afraid of getting in the middle and getting a little scratched up. If you're referring to his quickness, yes he is a quick guy for a big guy (he's 6-foot-8). If you're referring to Romero Osby saying that Spangler makes him better, yes. They both said the exact same thing to me and I interviewed them separately on different ends of the gym on the same night. And also, look where he got recruited to — Gonzaga. That's the No. 1 team in the nation right now. They aren't recruiting guys that are bad there and are making it to the top spot.
Who's got the tougher first-round draw? OSU with Baylor or OU with I-State?
Iowa State-OU. I say the Cyclones edge the Bears in showing up. They are both tough but there are nights when Baylor never quite shows up and then there are nights where they look like a top basketball team in the Big 12. That's never the case with Iowa State. They always show up, it's just whether they are knocking down threes at the right times. Plus, Iowa State travels REALLY well so that could be a big factor.
Josh Heupel was quoted as saying, “Jaz has a sense of urgency.” Does this mean we get to see Jaz Reynolds back in the staring line up?
Right now — of course like any position — they aren't saying. It's a high possibility though. Sterling Shepard told us that's who is teaching him a lot now that Kenny Stills and Justin Brown are gone.
